    Archie

Archie was a Jade Bonsai plant grown in the local Rochester area. While his namesake, Archibald Vivian Hill, developed the first mathematical description of receptor function, Archie’s ambitions were more modest. He enjoyed sunlight, a nice re-potting and water (but not too much water). Apparently too much water leads to root rot and can kill bonsais….

  • Kyle Berger, Ph.D.

    Postdoctoral Fellow

Kyle was raised on Grand Island, NY. He obtained his B.S. in Biochemistry with a minor in Mathematics from SUNY Fredonia in 2009 and M.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Fredonia in 2011. In early 2019, he completed his PhD in biophysics at the University of Rochester. His PhD research investigated the occurrence/structure of GU pairs near internal loops within RNA. The research was advised by Dr. Doug Turner of the UR Chemistry department. Shortly after completing his PhD, he accepted a postdoc position in the MacLean lab. There, he learned more about iGluR and ASIC structure/function.

  • Tyler Couch, Ph.D.

    Postdoctoral Fellow

"Other Tyler" was born in Binghamton, NY but grew-up in the Charlotte, NC area. He graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry from Winthrop University in 2013. Between undergrad and grad school, he spent two years working in industry, first doing quality control testing in a cough drop factory and later doing clinical pharmacogenetics testing. He completed his M.S. in Biochemistry at University of Rochester shortly before joining the MacLean lab where he studied the intracellular domains of an acid-sensing ion channel and developed tools to look at channel stoichiometry and trafficking.

  • Matthew Rook, Ph.D.

    Electrophysiologist

Matthew was born and raised in Rochester. He graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Matthew started his graduate studies in July 2017 as a Masters student in the Pharmacology and Physiology program. In the Fall, Matthew rotated in the MacLean Lab where he learned his favorite experiment, patch clamping! He joined the lab in March 2018 and successfully transferred to the Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology PhD program in July 2018. He progressed our understanding of acid-sensing ion channels.

  • Julianna Wagner

    Undergraduate Researcher

Julianna was raised in Galveston, TX. She is currently attending the University of Rochester as an undergraduate and is majoring in Neuroscience. She joined the MacLean Lab in June 2022 as a technician and gained experience for her future studies.

  • Dante Hovancik

    Undergraduate Researcher

Dante was born and raised in Binghamton, NY. He is currently attending the University of Rochester pursuing a B.S. in Biochemistry, as well as an Epidemiology minor. Dante joined the lab in March 2022 and learned about the basics of recombinant protein production.

  • Rutambhara Purohit, Ph.D.

    Postdoctoral Fellow

Rutu was born and raised in Odisha, India. She graduated with her B.Sc in 2012 from Ravenshaw University, Odisha with Zoology honors and Chemistry and Botany electives. She graduated M.Sc in 2014 with Biochemistry specialization from Sambalpur University, Odisha. She started her PhD in 2015 studying the interaction of Pannexin1 and P2X7 receptors. The research was supervised by Dr. Amal Kanti Bera in the Department of Biotechnology of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. She joined as a post doc in the MacLean lab in July 2022. She studied the desensitization of ASICs and structure-function of AMPA and its auxiliary proteins. She is now a member of the Sobolevsky Lab at Columbia.
